First Time Twin Daddy: Shock and Awe

A Three Part Series By daa-eee

Part I: Shock

twins dadCongratulations! You may have recently been told that you will soon be the father of a new set of twins. Now if you already have a child or two, this may not be too much different than what you have experienced before. If this is your first experience as a father you may have many questions or concerns racing through your mind. Maybe some of my own experience will answer some of your questions and ease some of your concerns.

We found out we were having twins at our first ultrasound appointment at 22 weeks. We had spent an entire day, the week before shopping for furniture. This kid was going to have it all; we went absolutely crazy! Fast forward back to the ultrasound. The technician leaned away from the machine and said, "I'm not going to beat around the bush. You have two babies."

The conversation in my head went something like this:

"Did she just say two? Wow. Two. How much did we spend on the baby's room? Times two, carry the one....holy cow! What does the wife think? She's crying. Is it good crying? Yeah...she's ok. I can do this. Ok, say something."

twins dadSo as time went on, I not only got used to the idea, I got excited. I had lobbied strongly for a few years for us to start a family and now I was about to increase the headcount by 100%. As the pregnancy progressed we went through a few phases.

0-3 Months
During this time period there was very little mood change. There was some morning sickness and let me tell you, placing some saltines and a bottle of water near your wife's side of the bed will go a long way. This is also the planning phase. You will talk about EVERYTHING. It's on her mind (and probably on yours) so go with it.

3-6 Months
This is known as the growth phase (be careful how you phrase it to her). This is a fun time where you both get to pig out. It's not a conscious act; you eat when she eats. It's hard not to. This is also known as the Let's Set Up the Nursery phase. Be prepared to carry stuff, answer questions on colors, shell out more money, etc.

6-9 Months
This is the countdown phase. This is when you get impatient. twins dadYou've been to the ultrasound each month. You worked on picking out the names(or you may have actually found names you agree on finally!) and now you're really ready to meet the children that have taken up residence within your wife. You find yourself day dreaming about the first couple of years and how great it will be that you will have two little partners in crime. Depending on how many weeks she can hold out for, you may start getting stronger. This is probably because you're helping her in and out of bed, chairs, and the car. This is the time that she really feels as big as she looks and it's time to turn the "Charm" and "Understanding". You should be preparing for and practicing the trip to the hospital with the intensity of a Cold War emergency drill. It's important to her that you have everything packed for the hospital. She will only use 25% of what she has instructed you to pack, but her sense of reasoning has been affected. This is an emotional time and you should attempt to escape confrontation. When the time to go to the hospital finally arrives, resist the urge to pretend you're Mario Andretti. Once you arrive at the hospital, attempt to appear calm. The key word here is "appear".
